Correa said the right is playing tricks to prevent democracy and the freedom of choice of the people.

Correa said the right is playing tricks to prevent democracy and the freedom of choice of the people.

President Rafael Correa claimed this week that there have been deliberate attempts by the right to destroy the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Correa claimed that the right is attempting to attack Latin America integration and its acting organizations.

“When the right cannot win by democratic means,” it tries to “destabilize governments,” he said, referencing attempts in Ecuador, BoliviaHonduras and Paraguay in which “Unasur reacted” to political events that didn’t go in their favor.

These are “the right’s tricks to prevent democracy and the freedom of choice of our people,” he said. Correa also described former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff‘s dismissal as a “joint parliamentary-judicial-media coup” and qualified it as “scandalous.”

“A new right has come about today,” he said. “Totally surrendered to the north, undemocratic, even traitorous to its own homeland, to its own history, that attacks integration.”

He denounced “deliberate attempts” to destroy Unasur and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) by attempts to enter Pacific and Transpacific alliances.

“I hope the peoples of Latin America wake up and see what is at stake,” Correa said.

On April 2nd, Ecuador faced a second round in which Correa’s candidate Lenin Moreno will face the opposition candidate from the Creando Oportunidades party (CREO).
